With news of all the price cutting news going on in the e-reader market I thought you might be interested to know that my e-reader has finally seen a price cut. The link above is for the e-bay seller I bought my eBookwise 1150 from for $120 US.

He is now selling it for $88.

Its still a pretty good reader (for the new price). It doesn't support epub, or calibre, but the conversion software it comes with is still pretty good and there is even some open source software out there. Check out kascarlett's advertising copy--its a bit over the top in terms of how wonderful the reader is, but everything he says is accurate

I bought the thing almost 3 years ago, us it every day, and its still going strong.

Ebookwise 1150 fades away

Nate at the Daily Reader comments on the silence surrounding the oldie but goody, Ebookwise 1150. My ebookwise is still my daily e-reader, but Nate's eb-1150 will probably last longer since he only takes it out of the box every once once in a while to see if its still working.

I happen to still have an 1150 in the original retail box. I pulled it out, and would you believe it was made in 2002? The hardware is 8 years old, and still being sold. Impressive.

I'm pretty sure mine was made in 2002 as well; the LCD screen looks a bit "aged" around the edges. I'm figure even with daily use it will still be working long after I get a new reader with all the fancy new features (like ePub support).

My next e-book reader

Yesterday, after recharging, my ebookwise 1150 world not power up. After a moment of panic I enabled the hard reset feature and it came back to life. After two and a half years of constant use I was worried that it had permanently given up the ghost, I knew that the device was manufactured several years before it got into my hands so parts could expire at any time.

I've been very careful with the reader. I always run it until the battery is completely exhausted and then do a full recharge. I managed to only scratch the glass once; and that was a tiny nick. Hopefully it will last for another year or two (or three), but just in case I'm going to keep track of the best bargains out there in case I've got to replace my reader. My basic requirements are that its at least a 5" screen and is priced well under $150 (under $200 if it is really awesome).

NOTE:
The Delstar OpenBook E-Book Reader (available at Walgreens's for $95 US) that I mentioned in a previous post is, apparently, a piece of crap. It is horribly slow, does not render documents well, crashes frequently, and has serious problems with its basic features (i.e. if you change font size it resets to the first page).

I think the the Ectaco Jetbook Lite may be the best bargain right now. Its available at Newegg.ca at $139 Cdn.

My ebookwise 1150

Besides visiting my local library, I get most of my reading material over the net and read it on my ebook reader.

I bought this ebookwise reader back in October 2007. It was an old product even before I picked it up on eBay from kascarlett for $120 US. I've been using it practically every day since then and the battery is still in good shape; it still holds a 15 hour charge.

I has a back-lit 5.5” diagonal 4-bit grayscale LCD touch screen, 8Mb internal memory and supports up to 128Mb on a Smartmedia card.

If you want more details about the ebookwise and all ebook reader-related matters you should visit wiki.mobileread.com. It had the depth to provide the technical details I needed to recalibrate my ebookwise. It also keeps up to date with the latest products.

My most compelling critereon when I first purchased the ebookwise was the price. I wanted something inexpensive so that I wouldn't be too upset if it got lost, stolen or damaged. If I was going to replace it today the most likely candidate would be the Delstar OpenBook E-Book Reader available at Walgreens's for $95.

I'm keeping my eyes open and I'll pass on what I find.
