On Covers - Book artwork needs to evolve

On Covers - Tools of Change for Publishing

I'm a bit ambivalent on the subject of book (and album) covers. It can be a fantastic piece of art that can be appreciated in its own right. On the other hand it can be a cheesy marketing mess on par with the art work on a box of cereal.

Given the changes in technology I would not be surprised to see more companion artwork like in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. Covers will always have a place in publishing, but times are changing and graphic artists need to enhance marketing possibilities with greater creativity when it comes to thumbnail graphics and scalable web/e-reader artwork.
