Sanyo's Eneloop Stick and Mobile Boosters will juice your gadgets on the go -- Engadget

I've been considering getting one of these for a while now: mostly because the battery in my e-reader usually runs out about 20 pages short of the end of the book.

This stick booster looks like its done everything right. You can replace the 2 rechargeable AA batteries with a fresh pair whenever you like.

Author Simon Singh Puts Up a Fight in the War on Science | Magazine:

"Wired: Why is it so hard to convince people, even when the science is so clear?

Simon Singh: Science has nothing to do with common sense. I believe it was Einstein who said that common sense is a set of prejudices we form by the age of 18. Inject somebody with some viruses and that’s going to keep you from getting sick? That’s not common sense. We evolved from single-cell organisms? That’s not common sense. By driving my car I’m going to cook Earth? None of this is common sense. The commonsense view is what we’re fighting against. So somehow you’ve got to move people away from that with these quite complicated scientific arguments based on even more complicated research. That’s why it’s such an uphill battle. People start off with a belief and a prejudice—we all do. And the job of science is to set that aside to get to the truth."

Fantasy Book Critic: "The Technician" by Neal Asher (Reviewed by Liviu Suciu)

Fantasy Book Critic: "The Technician" by Neal Asher (Reviewed by Liviu Suciu)

I picked up The Voyage of the Sable Keech on a whim from the public library once and got about 50 pages into it before I realized there was something wrong. There is nothing worse than picking up in the middle of a series and only understanding half of whats going on.

Liviu Suciu's review of
The Technician is invaluable to me because it starts off with a guide to reading Asher's Polity series in the order to best enjoy each novel. I'll be getting around to the Sable Keech and The Technician soon after I read the first few books in the series.

Very cool. I didn't know this was out there. I can't see my house like in Google but it is a great alternative that is completely open source.

Reviews of the Kindle3 look promising

An early review of the K3 (video) | The Digital Reader

A nice walk-through and comparison to the Kindle2.

Amazon Kindle Third Generation With 3G/Wi-Fi | Wired.com Product Reviews

WIRED Amazon keeps pace with a more competitive e-reading marketplace with a smaller device, more readable text, yet and another improved hardware interface. $139 price for Wi-Fi version will open the door for multi-Kindle families. Battery life is long enough for space shuttle missions.

TIRED Still the same DRM, no touch-screen navigation, the book-light case is too costly. Only those with tiniest fingers will avoid hitting the "back" button when moving the cursor down. Interface for newspaper and magazines still clunky.

A Newbie's Guide to Publishing: The Changing Face of Publishing

A Newbie's Guide to Publishing: The Changing Face of Publishing

An interesting article on the future of publishing with some interesting real-world examples of how the market is changing.

I like the end to the post:
And writers, brainwashed through years of Stockholm Syndrome, continue to have faith in a broken system that seems ill-equipped to weather the oncoming tsunami.

What if Dostoyevsky had been an online gambler? - The Globe and Mail

What if Dostoyevsky had been an online gambler? - The Globe and Mail

All the evidence suggests that online gaming will prove an irresistible temptation to those who already have the gambling bug (while probably making some new recruits.) Put a time-travelling Dostoyevsky in front of a computer screen and chances are he’ll soon be maxing out his credit card on a cyberspace roulette wheel, rather than completing the rewrite ofThe Brothers Karamazov.

And at what a dreadful cost. The most terrifying outcome of Internet gambling is isolation, estrangement from friends and family, estrangement even from the company of strangers in traditional casinos.

Unfortunately you can already gamble online if you really want to. Hopefully there will be some government-responsibility to go along with the government-greed.

Sorry, you can't open that book here – epub crippled by DRM

Sorry, you can't open that book here – Telegraph Blogs

As the population of e-book readers increases the grumbling about different formats and the "rental" metaphor of buying books will be met head-on. The music industry bowed to the realities of DRM and music sales (strong DRM decreases sales). The book industry will eventually see the light. In the meantime pirate DRM stripping software for books is batting 1000 and the regular Joe who wouldn't dream of picking a lock is the only one suffering.

Ben Bova: Knowledge really is power -- for better or for worse - another get off my lawn moment

Ben Bova: Knowledge really is power -- for better or for worse Naples Daily News

Another old author afraid of change, whose vision of the future is hampered by reminiscences times that never existed.

Knowledge is power. Literacy is not Knowledge.

Graphic novels that are based on a book are always not as good as the original. The same is true for movies based on books. Its also true that novelizations of comics and movies are not as good as the original. A graphic novel as an original work of art, like Gaiman's Sandman or Alan Moore's Watchmen, is not a poor man's novel. They are as nuanced and deep as a good novel.

The nature of literacy may be changing, but the quest for power (and thus knowledge) is still as strong as ever. The primacy of the long-form novel may be on the decline, but I am positive that its replacements are going to be just as effective in telling stories and imparting knowledge.

9 Must-have Clauses for Digital Rights Contracts - Michael Stackpole

9 Must-have Clauses for Digital Rights Contracts - Michael Stackpole

A very good blog post from Michael Stackpole. Given the shady dealings of Macmillan publishing with sending letters out to authors (bypassing their agents) asking for the digital rights to their backlists.

Stackpole gives some very clear examples of how an author can get ripped off if they're not keeping track of e-publishing developments. The nine points he comes up with are a must-read for any author out there.

He also highly recommends authors self-publishing and uses his and experience to support his recommendation.

9 Points:
1. A cash advance
2. A 6 month window for publication
3. A sunset clause on the contract
4. Clearly define which formats are to be used
5. Copies of all files, including source files
6. Electronic rights to the books are limited to one language only
7. Series royalties on a per volume basis and on an omnibus basis
8. Royalties should be calculated and paid every 60 days
9. The files will be made available to the author to sell from his own webstore

Chrome OS tablet coming from Google and Verizon - the fourth player in the tablet wars

Chrome OS tablet coming from Google and Verizon on Black Friday? -- Engadget

Tegra 2-based Chrome OS tablet for Google with a 1280 x 720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, at least 32GB of storage with the possibility of expansion, GPS, a webcam, and the usual wireless connectivity, including a 3G radio

Apparently it is coming out this fall and will be ridiculously cheap when purchased with a long-term Verizon contract.

So the four players are iPad, Android, Windows7, and Chrome/Chromium. Coming up is likely a Ubuntu based interface.

Michael Pastore reviews “Epub Straight to the Point” – new book on Epub creation

There is a bit of buzz out there about the Kindle e-book or IPad "app" supplanting the open source ePub format. This must not happen.

Michael Pastore reviews “Epub Straight to the Point” – new book on Epub creation | TeleRead: Bring the E-Books Home:
"You have probably heard the joke about the very amateur Shakespearean actor who, while playing Puck in the middle of A Midsummer Night’s Dream — was booed and pelted with organic tomatoes. The actor ripped off his mask, stopped performing, turned to audience and then shouted: “Don’t blame me, I didn’t write this junk!” … For a while, EPUB ebooks shared the same fate as the Bard: some hasty critics looked at some badly-made EPUB ebooks, and then griped that the EPUB format is a failure because it cannot make nice-looking books. Castro dispels that myth; her Chapter 4 — Advanced Epub Formatting — covers advanced topics including how to prevent ebook reading devices from overriding your CSS; how to choose the fonts in your ebook; how to create drop caps and small caps; how to control spacing and indents (essential when formatting poetry); how to insert images and their captions; and how to enhance (or, as some people [link to my Carr review] might say, increase the distractions in) your EPUB ebooks by adding links, tables and videos."

Entourage Edge Now Selling From Best Buy and Other Resellers - not in Canada yet

Entourage Edge Now Selling From Best Buy and Other Resellers | The eBook Reader Blog

Its not on the bestbuy.ca web site yet. At $499 US I'd wait until theres a user base out there to shake out the cobwebs. There will likely be a firmware upgrade or two in the next two months. The specs are impressive but for $499 I'd like to hear some real-life user experiences. Besides, come september/october there will likely be enough competition out there in the retail market to force a price drop.

Available Aug 28, and hopefully a success and quickly shanzai-ed by the end of the year. There are a couple of dual LCD and LCD-eink folding tablets out there, and for some reason I find this one the most compelling. If the haptic keyboard interface is any good then this is future of laptops.

Fantasy Book Critic: Interesting SFF Universes

Fantasy Book Critic: Interesting SFF Universes

A nice take on a favourites list.

"... present the sf-nal and fantasy universes that impressed me the most along the years. I will consider only *series universes* that have at least two books out with one noted exception. There will be thirteen categories with a juxtaposition of sf and fantasy choices for a total of 31 series including ties as well as a "classical" category at the end.

No repetition of universes in different categories and of course only favorites of mine are included. I linked to our latest reviews of series books whenever available, next to Wikipedia articles and finally to Amazon and you can explore further the series and their universes from there. I generally used the series name since it's usually the best known one rather than the name of the world/universe."

McSweeney's Internet Tendency: After a Thorough Battery of Tests We Can Now Recommend "The Newspaper" As the Best e-Reader On the Market.

A satirical look at the e-book vs. p-book controversy.

The most obvious advantage of The Newspaper was the size of its display, which outclassed its rivals both in terms of size and elasticity. The Newspaper display could be read at full size or, when flipped open, twice its normal width. We also had no trouble reading copy when the display was flipped to half or even quarter size. One of our engineers even figured out how to make a hat.

On Covers - Book artwork needs to evolve

On Covers - Tools of Change for Publishing

I'm a bit ambivalent on the subject of book (and album) covers. It can be a fantastic piece of art that can be appreciated in its own right. On the other hand it can be a cheesy marketing mess on par with the art work on a box of cereal.

Given the changes in technology I would not be surprised to see more companion artwork like in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. Covers will always have a place in publishing, but times are changing and graphic artists need to enhance marketing possibilities with greater creativity when it comes to thumbnail graphics and scalable web/e-reader artwork.
